How to stay injury free this Winter

With the cooler weather now upon us and Winter just around the corner, we thought it would be a good time to give our tips for staying injury free this winter.

1. WEAR CORRECTLY FITTED SHOES

Does it ever feel like your toes are overlapping each other of do they feel cramped and uncomfortable in your boots? It could be that your shoes are too narrow!

Wearing shoes that are too narrow for your feet can cause calluses, corns and ingrown toenails. Getting a Podiatrist to check your feet before buying your next pair of shoes will ensure you purchase the proper footwear for your feet.

If you happen to get an injury this winter due to your footwear not being right for your feet, come in and see us. We can help you to put together a plan for your new footwear and assist you in getting back to pain free as soon as possible!

2. STAY CHILBLAIN FREE:

Chilblains are caused by cold weather and poor circulation and can result in painful patches of swollen and itchy skin which can be red, blue or white. The winter months can be cold and dry so stay chilblain free by wearing warm socks and avoiding sudden changes in temperatures.

3. TRENCH FOOT PREVENTION

Did you know trench foot got its name during World War 1 when soldiers were reporting pain in their feet and illness due to wet feet from sitting in the rainy trenches for days on end?

Trench feet can create blisters and cause skin tissue to die and fall off making it very uncomfortable to walk and very hard to play sport, especially at your best!

Prevent trench foot by wearing extra thick socks and maybe even doubling up and wearing two pairs on those extra chilly days! It may also be a good idea to have a back-up pair of boots and socks and a towel to ensure feet stay dry if playing for a long period.
