What Is Knee Pain?
Knee pain is a common condition that can result from injury, overuse, poor biomechanics, or underlying medical conditions like arthritis. The knee is one of the most complex and weight-bearing joints in the body, meaning that even minor issues in alignment or function can lead to discomfort and long-term complications.
Common Causes of Knee Pain:
- Osteoarthritis – Wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions the knee joint.
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome – Pain around the kneecap, often linked to poor tracking and alignment.
- Tendonitis – Inflammation of the knee’s tendons, usually from repetitive strain.
- Ligament injuries – Damage to the ACL, MCL, or other ligaments due to sports or sudden movements.
- Bursitis – Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee joint.
- Poor foot biomechanics – Misalignment in the feet, such as overpronation (rolling inward) or supination (rolling outward), can place extra strain on the knees.
Signs and Symptoms of Knee Pain:
- Pain that worsens with activity or after long periods of sitting.
- Swelling, stiffness, or tenderness around the knee joint.
- Popping, clicking, or grinding sensations when moving the knee.
- Limited range of motion, making it difficult to bend or straighten the knee.
- Weakness or instability, causing a feeling of the knee “giving way.”
