What Are Fungal Nails?
Fungal nail infections, also known as onychomycosis, occur when fungi penetrate the nail plate or nail bed, leading to thickened, discoloured, brittle, or crumbling nails. The infection often starts as a small white or yellow spot and progresses, making the nail thicker, more fragile, and difficult to cut.
What Causes Fungal Nails?
- Nail trauma – Injuries like stubbing your toe or repetitive pressure can weaken the nail and allow fungi to invade.
- Poor hygiene and moisture – Sweaty feet, tight shoes, or failing to dry feet properly create the perfect environment for fungi.
- Weakened immune system – Individuals with diabetes, circulation issues, or compromised immunity are at greater risk.
- Unknown – there is still much unknown regarding the exact cause of fungal infections within the nails
