Chilblains

Chilblains – Painful, itchy, and easily preventable

Chilblains (also known as Erythema Pernio) are painful, itchy, red or purple patches that usually appear on the toes, fingers, and other extremities during cold weather. They occur when the skin’s small blood vessels constrict in response to cold, then rapidly rewarm — resulting in inflammation and skin damage.

If you’ve had them before, you’ll know just how uncomfortable and frustrating they can be. But the good news? They’re treatable, and even preventable, with the right care.

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning, tingling or intense itching
  • Swollen, red or purple skin patches (often on toes)
  • Skin that feels cold to the touch but is painful or itchy
  • In severe cases, blisters or ulcers may develop

Early care is essential. Left untreated, chilblains can break down and lead to infection — especially if the skin becomes cracked or ulcerated.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Chilblains can affect anyone, but are more likely in:

  • Older adults or people with poor circulation
  • Those with underlying conditions (Diabetes, Raynaud’s, Vasculitis)
  • Smokers and underweight individuals
  • Women (more commonly affected than men)
  • People taking beta blockers or vasoconstrictive medication
  • Anyone exposed to cold weather, particularly with tight footwear or socks

How We Treat Chilblains

At Custom Podiatry Services, we take a preventative and therapeutic approach:

  • Expert Assessment: We confirm whether you’re dealing with chilblains or another skin condition (like fungal infections or eczema).
  • Protective Padding and Dressings: To relieve pressure and aid healing.
  • Topical Treatments: To reduce inflammation and help restore skin integrity.
  • Circulation Support: Strategies to encourage healthy blood flow.
  • GP Collaboration: We liaise with your doctor when needed for medication review or prescription support.
  • Preventative Advice: Practical steps you can take to avoid recurrence each winter.

What You Can Do at Home

  • Warm your feet gently — never use hot water or heaters
  • Avoid scratching — it can damage the skin further
  • Apply calamine lotion or witch hazel for itch relief
  • Use antiseptic creams if the skin is broken
  • Wear loose-fitting wool socks, not tight socks or shoes
  • Stay warm — especially your core body temperature
