What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and inflammation in the joints—including those in your feet, ankles, and knees. It can make everyday activities like walking and standing difficult and, in some cases, lead to permanent joint changes and deformities.
Common types of arthritis we treat:
- Osteoarthritis: The most common form, often called “wear and tear” arthritis, where joint cartilage gradually deteriorates, leading to pain and stiffness.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease that mistakenly attacks the joint lining, causing swelling, pain, and joint damage.
- Gout: Caused by a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden, intense pain, especially in the big toe.
- Juvenile Arthritis: Arthritis in children, affecting movement and growth in the lower limbs.
Symptoms of arthritis in the feet and lower limbs:
- Pain, tenderness, or stiffness in the joints
- Swelling and redness around the affected area
- Decreased range of motion
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
- Changes in foot shape, including bunions and toe deformities
- Joint warmth and inflammation
