What is an ankle sprain?
An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments in the ankle stretch or tear due to excessive twisting or rolling of the foot. This can happen during sports, exercise, or even just stepping awkwardly on an uneven surface. Sprains can range from mild overstretching to severe ligament tears, leading to pain, swelling, bruising, and instability.
Symptoms of an ankle sprain:
- Sudden pain at the ankle after twisting or rolling it
- Swelling and bruising around the affected area
- Difficulty bearing weight or walking
- Ankle instability or feeling like it may “give out”
- Tenderness when touching the injured ligaments
Common causes of ankle sprains:
- Sports injuries – High-impact sports like basketball, soccer, and netball increase the risk.
- Uneven surfaces – Running or walking on rocky or uneven ground.
- Weak ankle muscles – Lack of strength and flexibility makes sprains more likely.
- Wearing unsupportive footwear – High heels or worn-out shoes can increase instability.
- Improper landing mechanics – Jumping and landing with poor form can overstress the ligaments.
