What is achilles tendinopathy?
Achilles tendinopathy is a condition that results from overuse, causing degeneration, irritation, or damage to the Achilles tendon—the strong, thick band of tissue connecting your calf muscles to your heel bone. It commonly affects athletes, runners, and active individuals but can occur in anyone who places repetitive stress on the tendon. The condition can develop gradually, leading to persistent pain, inflammation, and stiffness, particularly in the morning or after activity.
Signs and symptoms of achilles tendinopathy:
- Pain and tenderness along the Achilles tendon, especially just above the heel.
- Swelling or thickening of the tendon, making it feel inflamed or irritated.
- Morning stiffness that improves with movement but worsens after rest.
- Pain during or after physical activity, such as running, jumping, or climbing stairs.
Tightness in the tendon, making it difficult to stretch or flex the foot.
